Annie McIsaac and Robbie Johnson August 2016
Annie McIsaac’s wedding was a gorgeous affair held at St. Francis Winery, Santa Rosa. The day was filled with light-hearted banter, stories of college and lifetime friendships. Friends and family joined together on a Thursday to celebrate Annie and Robbie’s wedding in elegant style.
Jenny and Annie’s families are both a part of the dairy industry, so it was inevitable that their paths would cross throughout their lives. Jenny originally met Annie’s mother, Sue, through the North Bay Dairy Women. Annie and Jenny also knew each other from their Dairy Princess days. Annie won the title of Dairy Princess the year after Jenny ran. After Annie returned from college she became a client of Jenny’s and they got to know each other even more. Jenny had heard a lot about Robbie throughout hair appointments and was excited for Annie’s engagement and for the opportunity to be apart of her wedding day.
The morning of Annie’s wedding Jenny and I arrived at the Flamingo Hotel very early to start the styling of the bride, three attendants, Mother of the Groom (MOG) and the Wedding Ceremony Officiant. We set up our supplies as the women were out getting coffee and waking up for the day. As soon as they arrived back to the bridal suite we were prepared to start styling.
Jenny began setting hair immediately and I began doing the attendant’s makeup. Annie’s attendants were fun, silly and attentive to Annie’s needs throughout the day. They made the hours pass quickly as they joked about looking like a group of “Martha Washingtons.” Jenny sets everyone’s hair before any hairstyle is created. This creates the base of the hairstyle and ensures hours of celebrating without any of the hairstyles falling apart. Annie sent us a selfie the morning after her wedding to show that her hair and makeup had stayed in place even the day after her nuptials.
Annie described her wedding theme as being simple, elegant and classic. She created the details of her wedding with this theme in mind, and it seamlessly wove itself into Annie’s overall look as well. Annie did have a preview before the wedding for her hair and makeup. She wanted her hair pulled away from her face and to try a red lipstick, however she was open to Jenny’s suggestions. Jenny pulled Annie’s hair off her face into a structured side updo. She applied a generous amount of makeup using neutral colors to create a smokey eye and complemented it with a red lip. Annie knew immediately that she did not want to keep the red lip for her big day, but was happy with the overall style that Jenny created. The morning of the wedding we always consult with the bride one more time to make sure they are completely happy with the preview look. Annie had decided that she loved the dramatic style of the makeup but she wanted something a bit lighter on her eyes. Jenny was instantly able to adjust the depth of color on the wedding day and create a simple yet elegant makeup that was loved by all. The bride felt more like “herself” and felt that her groom would appreciate the effect. She kept her hair the same as the preview and went with a pink lip. Annie’s wedding gown was a stunning lace dress made by Martina Lilana. She wore simple and elegant jewelry from Ever Faith and fun blue wedges from Nine West. The mother of the groom wore her hair partially pulled back with some down in loose curls. I did her makeup in neutral brown tones giving her a glamorous look without being overly dramatic. She looked beautiful in her blue dress as Robbie walked her down the aisle.
The attendants all chose different dresses from www.weddingtonway.com, each had the base color of blue but showed the individual taste of each woman paired with nude wedges. The dresses seem symbolic to me because like the dresses each woman was a strong individual yet they complemented each other so well and created a beautiful unit of friendship. The overall feeling of the day was mutual respect, support and love. All of these women also had beautiful thick long hair, which Jenny styled into different types of gorgeous braids. Two of them had braided updos while one chose to wear a thick side braid. I did their makeup in a variety of ways to complement their skin tone, facial structure and personal style
The Officiant was a college friend who had flown out from Oklahoma. She is a woman with style who is gregarious and full of life. One of her many jobs includes being an auctioneer and she gave us a demonstration. I was quite impressed! As she sat in my chair she said she wanted a neutral look. I could feel the look of disbelief on my face, which I tried to hide, as I calculated everything I had learned about her style in the previous hours. I began talking to her about her eyes and how she normally wears them and gathering ideas in my mind, but I kept dismissing them. I was struggling because the look she wanted and the woman who was sitting in front of me were not meshing. Finally, we all had an “ah ha!” moment because we realized she wanted an understated look because she was the Officiant. Annie urged her to be herself. I was able to create a fun yet sophisticated makeup style for her while keeping her ceremonial duties in mind. Jenny did the same as she pulled her hair to the side and let it flow in loose curls.
After a long day of friendship, hair and makeup the girls were off to celebrate the love of Annie and Robbie. As Jenny and I packed up we were given delicious persimmon cookies (wedding favors) that were a family recipe, which we devoured on the drive home. Suzanne Karp captured beautiful images of the day, which gave us a glimpse into the ceremony and reception. Annie was the essence of elegance as she walked down the aisle toward her new future with Robbie.
