When you Shampoo your hair you are cleansing, so you really want to just focus on your roots. This opens up your cuticle in your hair. When conditioning, you want to focus on your mid shaft and ends of the hair. It is always best, if possible, to rinse out your conditioner or mask treatment with cool to cold water. This shocks your cuticle and has it shut to help it hold the conditioner, keeping your hair shiny healthy and happy!
You don't really want to ever leave your hair in a towel while you're getting ready. Unless your trying to create texture in your hair. When we leave a towel in our hair, it begins drying with the hair going in all directions and creates bumps in the hair. The best you can do is dry your hair so it's not dripping wet. Brush it out and part your hair where you would like your part to be. If you want texture in you hair, use a towel, if you don't, use a cotton t-shirt that is smooth. A towel has a rough texture that will rough up your hair and let your flyaway hairs go crazy. But a cotton t-shirt that is smooth, won't rough up those little hairs. Once you are done washing your hair, towel/t-shirt dry your hair so it's not dripping but don't leave it in a towel. As soon as we are done washing, our hair starts to dry. Starting with our roots. If you leave your hair up in it, the roots are going to dry in a way that you don't want. Thermal protection on your hair is so important for healthy, shiny, beautiful hair. Try and think of it as a protective shield protecting it from your hot tools. I'm #oribeobsessed because Oribe doesn't make it an option in their styling products, all of their styling products have thermal protection. Which helps clients and keeps stylist happy! Your basically getting two for one with their styling products. Style, shine and weightless control. Specially developed for finer hair textures, this ultra-light balm smooths and hydrates while imparting a hint of hold to blowouts, air-dried textures and finished styles that need a little polish.
I have actually used this product for a few different things. I love it as my blowout cream for my super f clients with fine hair. I have used it as a finishing cream. I have had it piece out a style. I love the light weight polish it gives to my styles. HOW TO USE: Distribute throughout damp hair. Blow dry or air dry for feather-light styles. Can also be used throughout the day as a taming finisher. BENEFITS: Specially formulated for fine to medium hair textures Adds a touch of styling hold and hydration without weighing hair down Restores elasticity to dry, damaged hair Strengthens strands to prevent breakage Detangles, smooths and adds shine to strands Can be used as a blowout lotion, light texturizer or finisher Dermatologist-tested Formulated without parabens, sulfates or sodium chloride Color and keratin treatment safe UV protection for hair Vegan, cruelty-free and gluten-free. Ingredients: Oribe Signature Complex (Watermelon, Lychee and Edelweiss Flower Extracts) defends hair from oxidative stress, photoaging and the deterioration of natural keratin all while protecting from the drying, damaging and color-depleting effects of the elements. Feather-Light Polymer Blend provides weightless hold for long-lasting, touchable style. Acai Fruit Oil rich in essential fatty acids such as omega-3, 6 & 9, maintains hair health while smoothing strands and enhancing shine. Hydrolyzed Pea Protein restores softness and elasticity to dry, damaged, porous and brittle hair. Passion Fruit Seed Oil intensely hydrates to replenish hair’s natural moisture without weighing it down. Bringing a picture to your stylist is a very easy way to make sure you are both on the same page. As a colorist, we deal with color, tone and underlying pigment all day long. But when a client uses words of caramel, chocolate, honey, etc we might be thinking different colors because the actual color of these words might be different to each person. This is where pictures come in very handy.
I try and make it clear to clients that the pictures they bring me are great for inspiration. Sometimes when we see a hairstyle on a model or an actress, we might think we are looking at the hair but are actually liking the whole package. The best example of this is Jennifer Aniston's hair while playing Rachel on Friends. Everyone wanted that haircut, you know the one I'm talking about; but when you take that hair off Jennifer, it's not going to look great on everyone. Most can have a version of what they are liking but not always exactly the same. You have to take into consideration face shape, hair texture, current hair color, hair length, hair thickness, skin color, skin undertone and underlying pigment just to mention a few things. When a client brings me a picture or pictures, the first thing I ask is, "What draws you to this picture?" and that's how I like to start my process and then we build from there. Pinterest is also a great tool to use for "inspiration" but most people need to know some of the photos are unicorns. Most are photoshopped which can change tone and color. When looking at a makeup picture, you need to look at your skin vs. the models. You need to see if the colors look realistic. This can actually go for most things beauty related on Pinterest. The haircut, the color and an updo. Most updos on Pinterest have hair pieces, extensions and could be wigs, also you don't always see the hair from all angles and might not look good from all sides. Just keep in mind of all the funny "Pinterest Fails" we laugh at. Pinterest needs to be used and Inspiration not a Unicorn. Products:

Great Mullein Flower, rich in vitamins B1, B5 and B12, creates soft and manageable hair while smoothing spilt ends and increasing shine. Hydrolyzed Quinoa strengthens and protects hair from breakage while providing body and movement. Yacón Root Juice, a tropical plant native to Peru, delivers nourishment and antioxidants to the hair. There are a lot of different kinds of extensions. I personally like to go with what's called a 'tape' in extension. (No, I thought the same thing at first, we aren't talking like scotch tape!) It is a tape-like glue that isn't hot. You stick two tabs together with a small section of your hair in the middle. I like to use these extensions because I feel they are less damaging to the hair. I have clients that think their hair doesn't grow (which it does, they get roots) but they use these extensions and their hair grows by leaps and bounds.
There are some clients that have weak hair from (whether it be from medications or diet) and these are not the ideal clients for extensions. The weight of the extensions overtime can pull off their hair because it's not strong enough to hold the extensions. If you don't fall into that, these extensions are amazing. I like to use them for clients looking for length, thickness, color or even all three. I also have many brides have me put them in for all wedding activities. (Many turn into "lifers" after) With these extensions you can wash and dry as normal (just takes a little longer, remember it's double the hair your used to). The cost of the hair is expensive, but you have to remember the hair is lasting you for six months so your buying hair twice a year if you take good care of the extensions. They do need to be moved up, back to your root, every 6-8 weeks with your stylist. Other types of extensions are hot glue in beads. I am not a fan of these. They easily can create knots in your hair, ripping out your natural hair. I also don't like the idea of hot glue being melted to the hair. These beads of hair come in smaller clumps of hair. The way it lays can look more unnatural depending on the look your going for. There are also sew in extensions where the natural hair is braided and the hair is sewn into the braid. Clip-in extensions are another option. These are good for short term use or filler for an updo. These can be tricky to be placed right in your hair and to be styled correctly to blend with your natural hair. You do have to be careful and make sure your clip-in extensions are real hair. It's very common for them not to be and once you put heat to them (curling iron, wand or flat iron) they will melt if not real. After a certain age, do I have to cut my hair short?
Girl, you do you! If you haven't picked up on it yet, I don't like to follow 'rules' or what I'm 'supposed' to do. I feel if you like your hair long, then let's keep it, your the one that is wearing it! But let's definitely give it a shape and style. The key to being able to keep your hair longer is to keep it full and healthy looking. In my opinion, healthy hair, is gorgeous hair. This whole thing about having to cut your hair is that it may be dragging you down. Here's the thing, a good style and cut can help that. Even a few highlights to give you a little pop. Now, if your hair looks like your holding on to scraps at the bottom, then you need to get cleaned up. That's not a good look for anyone. My mom is in her late 50's and she likes to keep her hair long. And it was getting to a point it wasn't as full as it once was. So I put extensions in her hair, actually for my wedding. I got married five years ago and she hasn't gone a day without them since and let me tell you, my mama rocks that long hair, but it is full from the extensions, healthy and always styled. I took these photos on consecutive days. On the first day I did a full
makeup complete with Huda Mink Lashes - Raquel. The second day I used the same makeup colors and technique except I changed the lower eyeliner from Twerk to pool party and did not wear eyelashes. I think the difference is dramatic. Which do you prefer? Essie - Gel Couture At EB Elite Artistry, one of our requirements for our stylists on your special day is to have our nails painted. In your getting ready pictures, our hands are either styling your hair or doing your makeup, so it's important to us to have our nails look on point for your pictures. We think of these small details so you don't have to. I honestly struggle with this, but always make it happen. Being a hairstylist my hands are in water what seems like 24/7. So with that being said, my manicure seems to last all of 10 minutes. Then on top of it, not only is my job working with my hands, I also live on a ranch, so I'm working with my hands all day everyday. (Which I wouldn't want any other way) I have tried what feels like every brand of polish. Some I definitely like better than others. But recently I have found Essie gel couture and it has been working the best for me. I'm liking it because I don't need a light to set it and it seem to last the best. My favorite nail color will always be a deep dark red that looks almost black. That would be my favorite, year round, I would have to say -- always my go to. I'm also loving a pale pink shade at the moment. I'll have to see if I'm still into it when fall hits. (My FAVORITE time of the year!!!) I do also like to change it up. I do my nails so often so I will always try something a little different. Right now for summer time, I'm finding I'm most attached to pale shades. |
