Being a makeup artist means sharing in special moments with a bride and bridal party during every wedding. You work and listen quietly or join in the conversation when needed, but for the most part you share these moments as an observer. However, some weddings strike a deeper chord because it is a friend getting married and you know most of the wedding party. Heather is a good friend of mine and Ethereal Beauty Elite Artistry was her choice for hair and makeup last September when she married her love Soheil.
Heather is one of my favorite ladies! She is laid back, funny and someone who is always ready to help or have fun. Not only do we share a best friend, Angela Howdyshell, but we have known each other since I was in second grade. We went to a small school, so even though we were in different grades we always knew each other. While in High School we also did cheerleading together for the St. Vincent Mustangs. We always joke that we had the left back corner monopolized because we weren’t the best dancers on the squad. Two of Heather’s bridesmaids were also cheerleaders with us, so it definitely felt like a fun reunion.
Heather was an incredible bride because she knew the direction and look she wanted to create but also allowed us creative license. She stuck to her scheduled appointments and was dedicated to the process of creating her style. Heather chose to have Hotheads Hair Extensions applied to her hair by Jenny. During her trial, due to our timeline, she had the hair extensions done and was able to have them moved up once between her trial and wedding day. Ideally, hair extensions should be applied on a separate day than a trial because the hair is ironed very straight for application. Usually for popular bridal updos, boho styles and romantic styles the hair is curled or set to optimize the desired look. The hair extensions do not hold the curl as well immediately after being applied, however Jenny is a magician and was able to create the desired hairstyle.
Jenny and I work together the day of the wedding and also during the trial day, so that the bride knows how her hair and makeup will look once complete. Heather arrived at the salon had her makeup applied , hair extensions applied and hair styled in one afternoon. Heather is not afraid of makeup and loves a smokey eye. I created an eye that contained plums, cranberries and rose golds, a cheek with plums and pink and she chose Kylie Cosmetics Koko K for her lip.
The morning of Heather’s wedding Jenny and I arrived at The Jack London Lodge in Glen Ellen at 6:45 am. We immediately set up and got to work on all the lovely ladies. Heather’s room was upbeat, fun and had a revolving door for guests, the wedding party and her beautiful children. In fact as we were in the middle of working Angela’s fiancé, Tim, popped by to say hi. He took a look at the girls and had a horrified facial expression. He blurted out, “People pay you to make them look like that!” I was in the middle of doing Angela’s makeup and looked at him all flustered and Jenny simply replied, “Yep!” Then we all started laughing. The middle of a makeup and hair session can be very chaotic and look a bit odd to an outsider. Jenny sets everyone’s hair so all the ladies look like they have little old lady hairdos or as they have been nicknamed “mini Martha Washingtons.” I was in the middle of Angela’s makeup so she had full eyeshadow, eyeliner, foundation and bake powder on her face. She looked completely white with dark eyes. Tim took a moment to converse and then hightailed it out of the room not to be seen for hours. Once he did return he conceded that everyone looked gorgeous. It is a moment that will always be highlighted in my career!
I did the makeup for four attendants, Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom. Each woman had an individual look that complemented her style and preference. The attendants wore beige/nude colored dresses so the makeup could be different depths and colors and match beautifully. Jenny styled their hair in a variety of ways as well from full updos to partial updos. The Mother of the Bride does not wear a lot of makeup so she chose a natural look. I worked hard to ensure she was comfortable but also pushed her outside of her normal limits after Heather and her sister Adrienne encouraged a little more depth to her eyes. I saw the Mother of the Bride shortly after the wedding and she confessed she had been nervous but absolutely loved her makeup once done. Jenny styled her hair in soft waves, The Mother of the Groom was the exact opposite she wanted dramatic, dark and sexy. She is a hairstylist so this did not surprise me. We created a very sultry sophisticated look that fit her personality perfectly. Jenny styled the short hair in a messy and sassy style, which the Mother of the Groom requested.
Heather was a stunning bride! She wore her hair partially pulled back in loose curls with lots of volume per her request. It was romantic and fit her wedding theme perfectly. We went for the dramatic eye but added a little more cranberry and deep warm browns to really capture her beautiful eyes. Her cheeks remained a plum with pink highlight and we deepened her lip to Kylie Cosmetics Posie K to give a more dramatic flair.
Kimberly MacDonald captured gorgeous images of Heather from the moment she arrived to the end of the wedding. It was a beautiful day of family, friendship and beauty. As Heather slipped on her mermaid style wedding dress and Jenny placed her wedding combs and veil a vision of Ethereal Beauty emerged before our eyes.
